Our last full day in Amboseli for this session, and a rather quiet and surprising day, as the Elephants did not come at all to the swamp as they have been doing for the whole week. Most likely it is because there has been rain in various areas outside and inside the park as well, making water available in more remote locations. We waited and looked around for the whole morning without success. It was only as we were on our way back to camp that we found the bull Tim making his way across the plains. In the afternoon we decided to check the western side of the park, and there we did find some Elephants but none were within reach of the roads. As we were photographing Zebras and Wildebeests in the dust, we spotted a lone Cheetah enjoying the cool evening breeze on top of a small mound. We watched her for a while and took some images as she crossed the plains with majestic Mt Kilimanjaro behind. A wonderful last sighting of Amboseli I think.

Oggi è stato il nostro ultimo giorno ad Amboseli per questo safari, ed è stata una giornata calma e strana, perchè gli Elefanti non sono arrivati alla palude di Longinye come hanno fatto per tutti i dieci giorni passati con grande regolarità. Probabilmente a causa delle piogge di questi giorni, hanno acqua a disposizione anche in aree più remote dell’ecosistema. Abbiamo aspettato e cercato, senza successo. Solo sulla via del lodge per pranzo abbiamo incontrato il maschio Tim che attraversava la savana.

Alla sera abbiamo controllato la parte occidentale del parco, e lì abbiamo trovato alcune famiglie ma tutte lontane dalla strada. E mentre fotografavamo Zebre e Gnu nella polvere, abbiamo visto un Ghepardo solitario, che si godeva il fresco della sera sulla cima di un dosso. L’abbiamo osservato per un po’ e fotografato mentre attraversava la prateria con il Mt Kilimanjaro sullo sfondo. Un ottimo ultimo ricordo di Amboseli, fino alla prossima volta.

This was a very interesting day, as we were lucky to see a tiny Elephant calf born just one hour before we came across the family. After talking with the Amboseli Elephant Research Project team, we identified the female giving birth as Dupes. We watched as the calf struggled to stand, surrounded by the mother and the rest of the family. A couple of other families came in to greet the newborn and help the family to chase the Hyenas that surrounded them to get to the placenta. The Hyenas finally succeeded despite repeated charges. Throughout, the newborn remained at the centre of the group, trying to suckle from any Elephant it could reach. We left them past noon, when the calf succeeded taking its first steps and followed the family for a few hundred meters to the edge of the swamp, where they spent the rest of the day. More Elephants sightings and close encounters kept us busy until sundown, with a strong downpour in the middle of the day. We also saw a Lioness with three tiny cubs playing in the early morning.

Una giornata molto interessante oggi, siamo stati fortunati nel vedere un piccolo Elefantino nato circa un’ora prima del nostro arrivo. Il personale dell’Amboseli Elephant Research Project ha identificato la madre, una femmina di circa 30 anni che si chiama Dupes. Abbiamo guardato da lontano il piccolo stare in piedi a fatica, circondato dalla madre e dal resto della famiglia che lo proteggeva. Un paio di altre famiglie sono accorse a salutare il nuovo nato e ad aiutare la famiglia a tenere lontano le Iene che volevano appropriarsi della placenta. Dopo svariati tentativi sono riuscite, nonostante le cariche delle Elefantesse. Il piccolo è sempre rimasto al centro del gruppo e all’ombra, cercava di allattare da qualsiasi Elefante avesse vicino. Siamo stati con loro fino a mezzogiorno, quando il piccolo finalmente è riuscito a incamminarsi in maniera stentata e seguire la madre per poche centinaia di metri, fino al bordo della palude dove sono rimasti per il resto della giornata. Abbiamo avuto molti altri incontri ravvicinati con Elefanti, e un temporale all’ora di pranzo. Stamattina presto abbiamo anche visto una Leonessa con tre cuccioli di meno di tre mesi.

After yesterday’s heavy rain, the Elephants delayed considerably their arrival to the swamp to the late morning. We couldn’t make much use of the beautiful morning light on the golden grass. In the evening it rained heavily on the slopes of the mountain but the Amboseli basin remained dry. We watched three young bulls in a sparring match as the sun hide behind the clouds.

Dopo la forte pioggia di ieri, gli Elefanti hanno ritardato il loro arrivo alle paludi. Non abbiamo potuto sfruttare la bella luce mattutina sull’erba dorata. Alla sera ha piovuto forte sulle pendici della montagna ma il parco è rimasto asciutto. Abbiamo passato il pomeriggio con tre maschi di Elefante che lottavano tra loro mentre il sole si nascondeva dietro alle nuvole.

A cool and cloudy morning in Amboseli. The sky cleared quite soon though, revealing Mt Kilimanjaro in all its beauty and snow covered slopes. We watched many Elephant families come into the swamps in two big waves. As one of my guests left with the afternoon flight, a strong dust storm blew in the western side of the park, we struggled to find some Elephant but all were grazing in the swamps. Soon after it started pouring rain really hard, and the Elephants all decided to leave the swamps more or less at once. They headed back to the east, but they dust-bathed extensively before disappearing.

Una mattina fresca e nuvolosa ad Amboseli. Il cielo si è schiarito abbastanza presto, rivelando il Monte Kilimanjaro in tutta la sua bellezza e le sue pendici innevate. Abbiamo atteso e osservato molte famiglie di Elefanti arrivare alle paludi in due grandi ondate. Mentre uno dei miei ospiti partiva col volo pomeridiano, si è scatenata una tempesta di polvere sul lato occidentale del parco. Abbiamo cercato degli Elefanti da fotografare ma tutti stavano pascolando nelle paludi. Poco dopo è cominciato a diluviare, e gli Elefanti hanno lasciato le paludi più o meno allo stesso momento. Si sono ridiretti a est, dopo essersi fatti abbondanti bagni di polvere.

After yesterday’s rain, the morning was cool and humid, and the sky was cloudy. We waited for the Elephants, who came in small groups taking it slowly before reaching the swamps in the late morning. We focused on a family with four tiny four months old calves, amazingly playful. Later we saw Tim walking across the park, away from his usual circuit for the past few days and into the Enkongo Narok swamp. In the evening we had another amazing sunset, with rain on the horizon and many families of Elephants crossing the plains, followed by flocks of Cattle Egrets.

Dopo la pioggia di ieri sera, la mattina è stata fresca e umida, e coperta di nuvole. Abbiamo aspettato gli Elefanti, che sono arrivati alla spicciolata. In particolare ci siamo focalizzati su una famiglia che ha tre piccoli di circa 4 mesi, bellissimi e giocherelloni. Più tardi abbiamo ritrovato Tim a spasso per il parco. Oggi ha fatto un percorso diverso e si è trasferito nella palude di Enkongo Narok.
Alla sera un altro bellissimo tramonto e diverse famiglie di Elefanti che attraversavano le pianure, seguite da stormi di Aironi Guardabuoi.

Today was probably the best day in Amboseli yet, as the environmental conditions were just perfect for photography. The right amount of dust, clouds, wind, and a light rain in the evening, coupled with some really nice Elephant families provided a huge array of opportunities. The highlight was when we photographed a family of Elephants with a long-tusked matriarch leading. We then left them and drove up the road to have a late breakfast. We sat on top of the vehicle with a stunning scenery of Zebras, Grant’s Gazelles and Acacias in front of us, and the Elephants slowly walked into this landscape, raising dust as they walked and coming to within a few meters of the vehicle. The matriarch looked at us briefly with her calf behind her, and then carried on. The evening was another full display of clouds and sunset colors, with Elephants grazing peacefully. It started raining right at dusk.

Oggi è stato forse il giorno più bello fino ad ora ad Amboseli. Le condizioni ambientali sono state perfette per le fotografie. La giusta quantità di polvere, nuvole, vento, e una leggera pioggia serale, unito ad alcune bellissime famiglie di Elefanti, hanno prodotto tantissime opportunità. Il momento più bello è stato dopo aver fotografato una famiglia con una matriarca con zanne lunghissime, ci siamo spostati per la colazione, di fronte a uno scenario incredibile con Zebre, Gazzelle di Grant e questa boscaglia semi-arida con Acacie.  Lentamente la famiglia di Elefanti è apparsa ai margini della scena, alzando polvere camminando piano. Sono arrivati fino a pochi metri dalla macchina. La matriarca ci ha guardato per un momento con il suo cucciolo tra le gambe, e ha proseguito. Alla sera abbiamo assistito a un meraviglioso display di colori del tramonto e nuvole, con gli Elefanti che pascolavano nella pace e nel silenzio. Al crepuscolo ha piovuto un po’.

Today we decided to start from the western side of the park, but we didn’t see many Elephants there. For the first time this week the sky was cloudy and the cold air of the night lasted longer than usual. We spent some time with a family of Elephants walking and grazing grass from the dusty soil. We are practicing a variety of photographic techniques, such as panning, stitched panoramas and black and white. We returned to Longinye where we watched a herd of two hundred Elephants walking together to the swamp from the east. An amazing and rarely seen sight.

Oggi abbiamo cominciato dalla parte ovest del parco ma non abbiamo trovato molti Elefanti. Per la prima volta questa settimana il cielo era nuvoloso e l’aria fresca della notte è durata molto più a lungo del solito. Abbiamo passato un po’ di tempo con una famiglia di Elefanti che pascolava sul terreno polveroso. Stiamo mettendo in pratica diverse tecniche fotografiche, come il “panning”, le panoramiche composte da più immagini e il bianco e nero. Per la tarda mattinata siamo tornati a Longinye, dove abbiamo guardato un branco di oltre duecento Elefanti camminare insieme verso la palude da Est. Uno spettacolo incredibile e molto raro purtroppo.

Another very good and sunny day in Amboseli for us, again around the central swamps of Longinye. The day started slower than yesterday. The big herd of Elephants was very far from the road with the best light, but later on we had an amazing thrill, as the big bull Tim came right up to our vehicle. His massive tusks and head were right out of the car, we could have almost touched him. In the afternoon we watched a number of families of Elephants leave the swamp at sunset, giving us good photographic opportunities with dust and backlight, and the spectacular and dramatic landscape of Amboseli behind.

Un’altra splendida giornata di sole ad Amboseli, ancora attorno alle paludi centrali di Longinye. La giornata è cominciata più lentamente di ieri, gli Elefanti erano ancora molto lontani dalla strada con le luci migliori. Ma più tardi abbiamo avuto un incontro ravvicinato estremamente emozionante con il grande maschio Tim, venuto vicinissimo alla nostra macchina. Avremmo quasi potuto toccare le sue enormi zanne. Nel pomeriggio abbiamo fotografato altre famiglie di Elefanti lasciare le paludi, con ottime opportunità fotografiche con polvere e controluce, e il magnifico e drammatico scenario di Amboseli sullo sfondo.

Oggi è stata una giornata indimenticabile attorno alla palude di Longinye. Abbiamo iniziato con una famiglia che pascolava all’alba, con un incredibile display di colori delle nuvole che prendevano tonalità diverse di rosso e arancio. Abbiamo osservato un clan di oltre un centinaio di Elefanti avvicinarsi alla palude. Tra loro c’era una femmina in calore, seguita da sei maschi. Uno di loro era in musth e dominava gli altri. Si è accoppiato con lei mentre gli altri osservavano in stato di eccitazione. Nel pomeriggio siamo tornati nella zona e abbiamo notato uno dei più grandi maschi dell’ecosistema, nominato Tim dall’Amboseli Elephant Research Project. L’ho fotografato nel 2010 e nel 2011 ed è stato molto bello ritrovarlo quest’anno. Pascolava tranquillamente nella palude mentre i maschi continuavano a seguire la femmina in calore. A un tratto Tim ha deciso che anche lui era interessato a questa femmina, e si è incamminato verso il branco con passo deciso e la testa alta. Ha scatenato il panico tra tutti gli Elefanti. I maschi si sono sparpagliati e allontanati dalla femmina. Le altre femmine e i giovani urlavano in allarme ed eccitazione. Tim, anche lui in musth, ha scacciato gli altri maschi fino a che non è stato chiaro che lui era il dominante e gli altri non hanno accettato la sua posizione. L’altro maschio in musth ha deciso di non sfidarlo e si è tenuto in disparte. Anche la femmina in calore urlava e camminava avanti e indietro con questo seguito di maschi, fino a che Tim non si è accoppiato con lei, con una luce incredibile del tramonto e le nuvole scure sullo sfondo.

Today we headed west, looking at the Elephants in the Enkongo Narok swamp. They were not as numerous as in the eastern side. We watched an extended family for most of the day, with six young bulls on the outskirts of the group playing and fighting. The younger among these bulls was repeatedly mounted by the bigger ones, in a sign of dominance. The sunset was beautiful, with a huge herd of Elephants in front of us peacefully grazing on the edge of the swamp. These idyllic scenes always make me think of how Africa must have been before humans began destroying everything. I wish I could travel back in time and soar over the plains of East Africa, filled with animals from the coast to the forest and nothing else.

Oggi siamo andati a Ovest verso la palude Enkongo Narok. Gli Elefanti non erano così numerosi come attorno alle paludi centrali dove eravamo ieri. Abbiamo osservato una famiglia estesa per quasi tutto il giorno, con sei maschi giovani attorno che giocavano e combattevano. Il più giovane di questi maschi è stato ripetutamente montato dagli altri più grandi, come segno di dominanza. Il tramonto è stato molto bello, con un grande branco di Elefanti al pascolo di fronte a noi ai margini della palude, un silenzio e una quiete incredibile, gli Ibis sacri che volano contro il cielo chiaro. Queste scene idilliache mi fanno sempre pensare a come deve essere stata l’Africa prima che gli umani cominciassero a distruggere ogni cosa. Vorrei viaggiare indietro nel tempo e librarmi sulle pianure dell’Africa Orientale, piene di animali dalla costa alle foreste e null’altro.
